Everyone knows what December means. In a little more than 10 days, it will be Christmas. We all know what Christmas means too, yeah gifts and wish list, unfortunately.

It’s sad because we are getting more and more materialistic in North America. Christmas means a lot for religious people but because I do not consider myself part of them I will not talk about it much. Don’t get me wrong, I give a lot of respect to them.

Christmas also means getting together, in family. What is the point with all those gifts? It’s the first Christmas that I am not as excited as before. The main reason is that I just realized that most 18 years old youngster in North America like me wish to have more. Why more if we have a roof, heating, running water, electricity, almost unlimited food, security…?

My mother told me yesterday to give her a wish list. I said that I was busy with my Final exams and that I do not have the time right now. I realized once in bed that I have problems finding out what I want. I have everything I need. A young 18 years old African would know what to ask.

There are people in Africa, Asia, South America, and even near us that are suffering. They don’t have the essentials that I enumerated before. I may sound cliché in this paragraph but it is something that I just realized a couple of days ago and that many have not realized yet. How could I ask for a brand new computer when these guys don’t even have access to running water? Are you able to do so?

Many of us might feel that in the society that we are in, we are almost forced to ask for gifts. This might be the reason why people of my age don’t take actions.

I might ask for a humanitarian trip or something like that. I think it would be a great idea since I do not need gifts I could give them to people in need. However, I do not need to go that far to make an impact in others life. My first step is writing this post…

Finally, for Christmas,

  1. I wish things could be different…
  2. I wish I could make a difference…
  3. I wish I will make that difference…
